Team Roping

by The Boss

Team Roping has been around since there have been Horses, Cattle and people willing to tie it all together regardless of the outcome. Sometimes the turn out wasn't very good. I know I have latched on to various "animals" that I definitely shouldn't have.

It all started with cowboys working together either during the brand, or doctoring sick cattle. It evolved (like other events) into a competition during the local rodeos. At that time there weren't heading and healing boxes, or a barrier to give the steer a head start, just a bunch of guys out in the pasture.

I hear there are still "pasture ropings" out in Nebraska. This is when the steer gets let out of the shoot and has a 100 foot head start out across 100 acres of pasture. You have to jump gullies, run through trees, dodging cactus and shrubs. You have unlimited loops you can throw to try and catch the steer. Still the fastest time wins. I hear the judges go through many horses trying to keep up with the ropers. I would like to see some of the pros go out and compete in a roping like this! This is how I learned to rope, for the most part. My theory was "If a cow or bull or yearling could make it through there, I could to". At that time I had horses that knew what was expected, and were capable. Now my horses rarely see much action outside of an arena.

Team Roping sure has come a long way in the last 100 years; it has changed dramatically in the last 15 years alone. Before, the only competition there was, was at the local rodeo. Now, you can literally rope every weekend, and make a pile of money doing it. There are guys, like you and me, out there making over 100k a year, oh and women to. Some of the prizes include Buckles, spurs, breast collars, blankets, jackets, year supply of ropes, rope bags, saddles, and yes even trailers and trucks and the list can go on. All this on top of the money! There are also the little ropings that this web site wants to promote. The ones that cost about $10-$50 to enter. The payout isn't as high but they sure are a blast for the beginner or someone like me that is still getting my horses started. The picture shown here I found on the web, I don't know who they are or where it was taken, but thought it was cool.

GUIDE TO LIFE:
Never smack a man chewin' tobacco.
Don't squat with yer spurs on.
Always drink upstream from the herd.
There's a lot more to riding a horse than just sittin' in the saddle and lettin' yer feet hang down.
Nobody ever drowned himself in his own sweat.
No tree is too big for a short dog to lift his leg on.
Remember even a kick in the caboose is a step forward.
Go after life as if it's something that's got to be roped in a hurry before it gets away.
Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.
Never kick a fresh cowpie on a hot day.
Never miss a good chance to shut up.
Never drop your gun to hug a grizzly.
Getting older is the only way to live long.
By the time a man is wise enough to watch his step, he's too old to go anywhere.
